ACKU Building

A Purpose-built Facility

The new ACKU building stands at the heart of the Kabul University campus. The design embodies the goals of ACKU as a centre of learning, enquiry and interaction. It integrates the various functions of ACKU around a central courtyard – a configuration that is central to the Afghan sense of space. The new facility will better enable the Center’s programs to reach all Afghans, especially the youth, and encourage them to acquire and employ information that will help them address the challenges of rebuilding their nation. It is envisaged that the new building will be a space where students and professors from Afghanistan and abroad can interact in a congenial environment while developing research and information technology skills.

ACKU took a giant step forward today.  Work on the soaring roof of the 17 meter x 12 meter Reading Room had been delayed for two months because of concerns over the deflection of the first design of the roof slope which rises from 4.60 meters in the NE corner to 7.10 meters in the SW corner.  Potentially very dangerous if not precisely correct.  Two reviews of the structural design were required before work could go forward. Metallic scaffolding was fixed and carefully welded to avoid sliding of the forming.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 62 cubic meters of concrete were poured with no damages to the forming.  One of the carpenters was rewarded with a prize in recognition of his careful attention to detail.  Khairat was offered during the luncheon given by Engineer Rafiq, which was attended by members of the Ministry of Higher Education, Kabul University, ACKU and all the workmen.

As it rises, the ACKU building becomes more and more impressive.  A major step took place on 25 March when a large area of cement was poured for the floor of the Reading Room.  Engineer Rafiq, the contractor, invited all the workmen, the ACKU staff, members of the Department of Plan and other officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Chancellor of the University and his office  to share in a sumputous, delicious meal at the site after which prayers were said for the successful completion of the building and prosperity for ACKU's future.
