Acquisitions

ACKU collects materials related to Afghanistan in a wide variety of formats and on all subjects:books, monographs, reports, periodicals, serials, newspapers, posters, maps, music, photograph prints, slides, recorded sound, and videos, and various types of ephemera.Some are sent by organizations; some are donated by authors and friends; some are purchased. One Acquisitions Officer is employed. About 1000 items are received each month.

Catalogue

New Western language material is entered with Library of Congress call numbers and authorized subject headings according to Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2).Dari and Pashto materials are entered in the original script.Three cataloguers are employed.

Digitization

Since 2007 selected materials are digitized and provide immediate online access.  The Library of Arizona digital collection website created a home page to enhance user access to the ACKU digitized collection: hhtp//:www.afghandata.org  Three digitizers are employed.  As of January 2013 800,000 pages have been digitized.

Reading Room

ACKU's Reading Room is located on the first floor of Kabul University's Central Library, with over 1000 readers a month, The Reading Room provides readers with a congenial space for studying and accessing research material through the internet and the ACKU database.

Due to ACKU's movement and resettlement to its own facility, we did not have many amount of users for the month of January and February 2012.

ABLE

ABLE, the ACKU Box Library Extension is the outreach component of ACKU established in 1996 in Peshawar to serve refugee communities and high schools.  ABLE has published easy-to-read books for new literates under 137 titles (1,000 in Dari and 1,000 in Pashto of each title) that represent the reading interest of both rural and urban populations. In Afghanistan, 215 ABLE libraries are located in all provinces of Afghanistan, providing some 243,410 books, including those purchased from the bazaar.  Other organizations following the ABLE model purchased ABLE books and have established some 60 libraries.
